How I keep my kitchen (and life) from total chaos- one sleeve at a time

By: Kayla Brint

You know that moment around 5 p.m. when someone asks, “What’s for dinner?” and you suddenly want to cry into a sleeve of crackers?

Yeah-same.

I’m a mom of two boys (one of whom plays travel sports), I run a full-time business, I host a podcast, and I’m always trying to get a home-cooked meal on the table without losing my ever-lovin’ mind.

So when I say I’ve tried everything to simplify meal planning—I mean it.

interest boards. Recipe apps. Chalkboards. A chaotic stack of cookbooks.

Spoiler alert: none of it worked for me.

But then came the humble binder.

Just a regular, ol’ three-ring binder. And y’all… it changed everything.

Meet the Hero of My Kitchen: The Recipe Binder

I started it out of desperation. I love cooking, but I never make a recipe the same way twice.

I’m a chronic modifier. A little less of this, a little more of that…

and the result?

Something delicious I could never recreate again.

So I bought a cute binder (mine’s from Emily Ley), grabbed some plastic sleeves, and started printing out recipes that I actually liked—and making notes on them. Real notes like:

  • “Add twice the garlic next time.”
  • “No potatoes—Chase hates potatoes in soup.”
  • “Worth loved this, add it to the regular rotation.”

That’s it. That’s the system. And it works.

Why It’s Better Than Any App or Pinterest Board

Let’s be real: my phone is a disaster in the kitchen. I get a text mid-recipe and suddenly I’ve lost my place and dropped tomato sauce on my screen.

Printing recipes means:

  • No distractions
  • No greasy phones
  • No more re-Googling recipes
  • No more trying to remember what I changed last time

And thanks to those handy sleeves, when spaghetti sauce pops or something gets wild on the stovetop (and it will), I can just wipe it clean and move on.
